The Soulsville Foundation was created in the late 1990's by a group of concerned Memphis business leaders and former employees of Stax Records to ensure that the rich legacy of the
Soulsville, USA community-which had been home to Stax in the 1960's and 70's-would not be lost to history. The Soulsville Foundation currently funds and operates three subsidiary organizations:
Stax Museum of American Soul Music. In 2003, the world's first and only soul music museum opened its doors to the public with a gala, week-long celebration of fundraisers, public forums, and all-star concerts. Since then, the Stax Museum has welcomed hundreds of thousands of people, sharing the story of American soul music-the "Memphis sound" in particular-through live music events, special exhibits, and various community outreach programs.
Stax Music Academy. Since 2000, the Academy has been serving at-risk youth from throughout the Memphis community with its unique brand of mentoring experiences, high-quality music education programs, and performance opportunities. Our mission at the Academy is to enhance the academic and leadership potential of each student, inspiring them through music to become catalysts for positive change in our community. In July 2002, the Academy's two-story, 27,000 sq. ft, state-of-the-art facility became the first component on the Soulsville campus at the famed intersection of College Street and McLemore Avenue.
The Soulsville Charter School. Opened in 2005, our school provides a day-long, academically rigorous, college preparatory education focused on instilling each child with the thinking skills, work ethic, and appreciation for learning that he or she will need to succeed to the world. The Soulsville Charter School currently serves boys and girls in grades 6 - 8, with plans to expand by one grade every year through 2011.
In all of its programs and projects, the Soulsville Foundation strives to build on our neighborhood's unique history and cultural importance to make it a thriving, successful urban community. We are always eager to form relationships with local, regional, national, and international partners who share our dedication to making the birthplace of American soul music a safer, strong, prosperous place for all. now and forever.
